  • The respected Washington political commentator Charlie Cook says that it's as if George Bush's chief political adviser permanently carries a three-inch by five-inch card in his pocket. On the card, the adviser, Karl Rove, has written the most important political priorities of the Bush administration. The first, says Cook, the publisher of the non-partisan Cook Political Report, is "protect your base". That is, to attend to the political needs of the conservative wing of the Republican party to which he is most beholden. The second priority that Cook infers from watching Bush's political behaviour is: "Don't cross the Israel lobby." Note that the Israel lobby is not the same as the broad population of Jewish Americans, but a narrower group that works to secure US government support for Israel's security and foreign aid requests. >Go

What is demonstrably true is that Israelis believe that the war in Iraq is — to use a phrase that is a staple of Jewish satire — good for the Jews. • "Protest" against Moran all-Jewish
Meanwhile, protests continue against U.S. Rep. James Moran of Virginia, who said last week that Jews were behind the buildup toward war with Iraq. Six fellow Democrats in the House of Representatives said that his comments were "offensive,'' "ignorant'' and "grossly irresponsible,'' and that if he seeks another term, they would not back him. The six, all of whom are Jewish, are Henry Waxman of California, Martin Frost of Texas, Tom Lantos of California, Sander Levin of Michigan, Benjamin Cardin of Maryland and Nita Lowey of New York. The Washington Post also came out strongly against Moran, saying that his remarks perpetuate anti-Semitic views and "confirm our opinion that he is unfit to serve in Congress." >Go

  • Could it be any more obvious?
United States Congressman Tom Lantos, a Jewish Democrat from California, gave a strong, emotional defense of America's plan to invade Iraq to 250 community members who gathered at a conference held at The Conservative Synagogue last week. The event was sponsored by AIPAC (American Israeli Political Advocacy Committee). AIPAC is an extremely influential domestic lobby that advocates on behalf of American Israeli affairs in the U.S. Congress and Senate. >Go

“Remarkable restraint”. The administration of George Bush the First coined that phrase in reference to Israel’s submissive/cooperative stance during the Gulf War. Ariel Sharon’s spokesperson has used it on CNN with regards to our controlled response to terror. And George W. Bush requires it of us while he fiddles with the UN. I think it is remarkably stupid that this post-Holocaust Jewish nation is willing to submit to continued torture and blood-letting while we wait for America to act. What type of restraint are we talking about? Is it the world’s longest umbilical cord or an iron chain that fetters us? Is it a lifeline or a manacle, or a little bit of both? For awhile, it resembled an umbilical cord, as America and Israel shared a great symbiotic and fraternal relationship. Israel was able to successfully manage the Six-Day War, Operation Entebbe, the bombing of Iraq’s nuclear plant, and the rescue of Ethiopian Jewry without too much interference from the United States. America stood by us as a valuable diplomatic ally. Israel would act, followed by a noisy outcry in the world community and America would respond, like a good friend, by vetoing those nasty UN resolutions or using other diplomatic means to settle things down. Those were the days. It should be noted that the relationship has hardly been one-sided. America has received vast amounts of intelligence information from the Jewish State, in addition to having Israel’s stable, democratic presence in a volatile, but vital, region of the world. >Go

  • Jewish Editorial: We will conquer our enemies on Purim
But this year, we don’t have to remember Amalek; we are living in constant fear of him. Or them. We have Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and millions of fundamentalist Muslims who would like to see Jews, women and children obliterated from the earth. Because this Purim we know that it’s going to take some difficult and dangerous work to triumph over our oppressors. And in today’s topsy-turvy world, we have no assurance that we can succeed. >Go

  • Jews against Israel
Neturei Karta, a Zionism-denouncing, Palestinian-embracing subculture within ultra-Orthodox Judaism, is suddenly sharing the spotlight in the antiwar movement. America, says Rabbi Chaim Sofer, has been "hijacked by Zionists. This whole war is to secure the assets of the Israeli occupation. We, as Jews, have an obligation to tell the truth about this war." >Go
  • Sharon denies Israel pressing US to hurry Iraq war >Go
  • Editorial: Israel wants a fourfold increase in U.S. aid—from $3 billion a year to $12 billion, larger than last year’s entire U.S. foreign aid of $11.6 billion for all countries. While Israel asks for an eye-bulging increase in funds, including help for its economy, President Bush tells governors pleading for a hand with their killer state budgets now $80 billion short, sorry, the cupboard is bare. So, in return for record aid, why not ask Israel for something big in return for a change. >Go
  • Jewish Editorial: The Americans have interests, too
One of the secrets of Ariel Sharon's political charm is the magical influence over President George Bush that is attributed to the Israeli premier. Sharon managed to register Bush for the Likud Central Committee, and rode their friendship to a sweeping victory in the elections. Together, the two foiled every political plan that threatened to push Israel into concessions or to harm its efforts to defeat the Palestinians. >Go
